Server 2008 Roles and Features Prerequisites for SharePoint

Microsoft Server 2008 Roles and Features required prior to installing SharePoint 2007 or WSS 3.0.

Prior to installing SharePoint you'll need to configure the follow items; these are considered prerequisites and requirements. If you're installing SharePoint on Server 2008 R2 RTM you'll need to perform a slipstream install of SharePoint (post coming soon) but you will still need the following server roles and features added and configured prior to the installation.

How to: While signed is as an Administrator on the server click Start -> Administrative Tools -> Server Manager -> click Add Roles and then begin to add the following roles listed in the requirements section of this post. When you're finished repeat these steps again but this time select the Add Features option.

  • Requirements:
    Server Role:
    Web Server IIS
    • Web Server: Role Services
      • Common HTTP Features
        • Static Content
        • Default Document
        • Directory Browsing
        • HTTP Errors
      • Application Development
        • ASP.NET
        • .NET Extensibility
        • ISAPI Extensions
        • ISAPI Filters
      • Health and Diagnostics
        • HTTP Logging
        • Request Monitor
      • Security
        • Basic Authentication
        • Windows Authentication
        • Digest Authentication
        • Request Filtering
      • Performance
        • Static Content Compression
        • Dynamic Content Compression
      • Management Tools
        • IIS Management Console
        • IIS 6 Management Compatibility
        • IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility

  • Server Feature:
    • Feature: .NET Framework 3.0 Features
      • .NET Framework 3.0 Features
      • XPS Viewer
      • WCF Activation
        • HTTP Activation
        • Non-HTTP Activation

Once this is done I recommend running a Windows update to pull down any update you might be missing; if you have none continue to the install process. Remember for Server 2008 R2 RTM you'll have to create a SharePoint slipstream install with all the needed updates or the OS will block the install. Happy Installing, Kris Wagner aka SPK
